There are many rituals in Hinduism for the long life of husbands. One such vrat is the Vat Savitri Puja. The Vat Savitri Puja gets its name from the Vat (Banyan) tree and the famed lady Savitri of ancient times. Savitri is credited with being able to win her husband back from Lord Yama – The god of death.
Vat Savitri Puja is a festival of the Hindus which is generally celebrated in the month of Jyestha. In few areas it is celebrated as Vat Amavasya (Amavasi) and in other areas it is Vat Purnima (Full moon day).
In 2012, Vat Savitri vrat (Amavasi) date is May 20 as per North Indian Hindi calendars. In Amavasyant Hindu calendars followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andha Pradesh & Karnataka, Vat Savitri Amavasya date is June 19, 2012. Vat Purnima (Jyeshta Purnima) 2012 date is June 4.
